Keep Windows 10 from Stealing Your Bandwidth

You might have heard about Windows 10—the latest and greatest operating system from Microsoft. It seems that everyone is talking about it, especially since for the first time ever, Microsoft is giving it away for free (for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices). You can learn more about what's new with Windows 10 and if it's right for you to upgrade here [].

As much as people are enjoying Windows 10, there's one sticking point for people with metered Internet connections like yours: The update can really eat up a lot of bandwidth.

Fortunately, as an Exede subscriber, you can enjoy all the benefits of the Windows 10 upgrade without sacrificing any of your bandwidth. All you need to do is change a few setting in Windows, and you'll be good to go!

1: Disable Automatic Downloads

The first thing you need to do is tell your current version of Windows to download your Windows 10 update ONLY during the Late Night Free Zone, when your Internet connection is unmetered. To do that, follow these instructions:

If you're running Windows 8.1

  1. Click the View Available Network icon in the system tray, then right click your Internet Connection. Select the option Set as metered connection.

If you're running Windows 7

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click Change settings.
  3. Under Important updates, select the following:
    • Install updates automatically (recommended)
    • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
    • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
    • Never check for updates (not recommended)
  4. To schedule your automatic updates, next to Install new updates, select the day and time you want updates to occur. In this case, schedule the update to occur during the Late Night Free Zone.

2: Disable Shared Downloads

Because Microsoft wants to ensure that everyone can access the update, it has implemented a new system that allows people to automatically share pieces of the update with each other. This prevents everyone from downloading the update all at once and crashing Microsoft's servers. (If you've heard of peer-to-peer networking services like BitTorrent, this operates on a similar principle).

You'll also need to disable this feature to ensure that you don't use up all of your bandwidth. To do that:

  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
  2. Under Windows Update choose Advanced options.
  3. Under Choose how updates are installed click Choose how updates are delivered.
  4. Disable the toggle under Updated from more than one place

And there you go! You'll be enjoying the benefits of Windows 10 in no time.
