Online Communities

Online communities, such as myspace.com, are public websites where people can meet other people, blog, participate in forums and more. It’s a place to communicate and interact online.

When participating in this types of online activity:
•Don’t post or giv e out personal information or anything to indicate your location, such as your full name, address, phone number, instant messenger screen name, banking or credit card info, passwords, etc.
•Remember people may not be who they appear to be. Be careful when adding people you don’t know to your friends list. If you should decide to meet someone you’ve met online, meet in a public place. Take someone with you and let people know where you’ll be.
•Don’t post anything that would be embarrassing to you later. In addition to friends on your list, employers, family and community members may look for or come across your information when searching the Internet.
•If you have kids on these sites, check up on them, know who their friends are and talk to them about Internet safety.
