Making PDF’s
PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It was created by Adobe Systems and has an extension of .pdf. It allows a document created in other formats to be read by computers without that program, as long as they have Adobe Acrobat Reader. (available for download at http://get.adobe.com/reader/)
Some programs, such as the newer versions of Microsoft Office, have the ability to save a document as a PDF using the Save As feature of the program.
Free downloads are also available to make your own PDF documents. One such program is Cute PDF Writer. To get a freeware copy of this program, go to www.cutepdf.com. Once the program is downloaded, create your document. Go to File; then Print, and Choose the “Cute PDF” printer, which will allow you to save the document on your computer as a .pdf.
E-mail Security
It can’t be said enough...Don’t open unknown email attachments. Before opening any email attachments, be sure you know the source of the attachment. It is not enough that the mail originated from an address you recognize. Viruses and spyware might be distributed in cleverly disguised programs.
If you need to open an attachment before you can verify the source, we suggest the
following:
• Be sure your virus definitions are up-todate.
• Save the file to your hard disk.
• Scan the file using your antivirus software.
• Open the file.
For additional protection, you can disconnect your computer’s network connection before opening the file. These steps will help reduce, but not eliminate, the chance that viruses, malicious codes, etc. contained in the attachment might spread from your computer.
