Access & Energy Charges
For most members, Mille Lacs Energy’s rates are made up to 3 types of charges:
Access Charge
A flat fee designed to cover the costs of the backbone electric system – maintenance and depreciation of the lines, substations, and transformers, along with bill preparation, meter reading, customer service functions, right-of-way maintenance, and interest expense. Those costs exist to provide access to electricity whether or not any energy is used. The access charge is also designed to have all members pay their fair share of fixed costs.
Energy Charge
A charge designed to cover the cost of wholesale power and the delivery costs to get the kilowatt-hours to the meter.
PCA (Power Cost Adjustment)
The difference between our actual cost per kilowatt-hour and the wholesale power cost at the time rates were established. When our actual cost of power is higher, there is a PCA charge; and when our actual cost of power is lower, there is a PCA credit on bills.
