Member Information

The undersigned (hereinafter called “Applicant”) hereby applies for membership in and agrees to purchase and take delivery of electric energy from Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative (hereinafter called the “Cooperative”), under the terms and conditions stated on the back. With the provided social security number, MLEC has the right to check the applicant’s credit and verify identity.
MLEC requires a $365 deposit from all members. The deposit may be waived by conducting a soft credit check. If you would like this done, call our office at (218) 927-2191.(Required)

  1. The Applicant will, when electric energy becomes available, purchase and take delivery from the Cooperative all electric energy purchased for use on the premises described on the front of this application and will pay therefore in accordance with the appropriate rate schedule as determined from time to time by the Cooperative; provided, however, that the Cooperative may limit the amount of electric energy to be furnished for industrial use until proper contracts and system changes can be made to accommodate any Member’s special needs.
  2. The Applicant will cause his/her premises to be wired in accordance with wiring specifications as required by the State Board of Electricity and the Cooperative. It is the Applicant’s responsibility to maintain their electric service in such a manner that the meter remains accessible to the Cooperative at all times. Should accessibility to the meter become restricted, the Applicant shall be responsible for all expenses associated with relocating the metering.
  3. The Applicant will comply with and be bound by the provisions of the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Cooperative, and any rules, regulations, and policies as may from time to time be adopted by the Board, and specifically acknowledges the authority of the Cooperative to inspect, repair, upgrade and maintain the electric distribution system, which includes keeping the right-of-way clear of all buildings, structures, trees, undergrowth and other obstructions that may interfere with or endanger the Cooperative’s facilities and equipment.
  4. The Applicant agrees to furnish at no cost to the Cooperative any reasonably requested easement over, above, across, or under the surface of the land owned or leased by the Member, not only for the purpose of extending service to the Member but also for the purpose of extending service to others or otherwise constructing needed facilities.
  5. The Applicant, by becoming a Member, assumes no personal liability or responsibility for any debts or liabilities of the Cooperative, and it is expressly understood that under the law the Applicant’s private property is exempt from execution for any such debts or liabilities.
  6. If the Applicant becomes indebted to the cooperative and the Cooperative incurs costs in collection of the debt, the Applicant agrees to be financially liable and responsible for all costs of collection in addition to the debt.
  7. To avoid the expense of preparing checks when refunds of electric account credit balances and/or the refund of capital credits is less than $25, the Cooperative will transfer the balance to another active account belonging to the member or if the member has no other account, balances less than $25 will be transferred to Donated Capital or Unclaimed Property
  8. Continuity of Service: The Cooperative will use reasonable diligence to provide and maintain uninterrupted service to its members. In cases of cessation, deficiency, variation in voltage, or any other failure or reversal of the service resulting from acts of God, public enemies, vandalism, accidents, strikes, riots, wars, repairs, orders of court, or other acts reasonably beyond the control of the Cooperative, the Cooperative shall not be liable for damages, direct or consequential, resulting from such interruption or failure.
  9. When construction of new electric service is required, the acceptance of this application by the Cooperative shall constitute agreement between the Applicant and the Cooperative, and the contract for electric service shall continue in force for a minimum of two years from the date service is made available by the Cooperative to the Applicant, and thereafter until cancelled by at least 30 days written notice given by either party to the other. The Cooperative may, however, terminate electric service without notice if the bylaws of the Cooperative or the rules, regulations or policies adopted by the Cooperative are violated by the Applicant. The Applicant shall pay the established minimum rate ($49 per month) during the term of this contract from the date the meter is energized or six months from the date service is made available, whichever comes first.

Note: An initial cost contribution of $250 is required. If new service is not installed or is canceled, the initial cost contribution is retained by MLEC for service incurred.

Additional Fees & Requirements

All fees are due before construction begins. The following may be included:

  • A $365 deposit may be needed before we can install the service.
  • Deposits are applied to your account after 12 months of on-time payment history with us.
  • Following receipt of the application with your social security number, MLEC will run a brief credit check. If a satisfactory credit history is found, the deposit will be waived/refunded.
  • Footage charges of $9.50 per foot for single-phase residential power.
  • A transformer fee of $500 if a new transformer needs to be set for your service.
  • All fees for any special permits such as those required for road crossings, DNR, or railroad are your responsibility.
  • Permits are not applied for until all paperwork and payments are received in our office. MLEC will apply for these permits on your behalf. The length of time to receive permits is dependent on the agencies involved.
  • A distance of less than 300 feet will be constructed overhead unless it’s an extension of an existing underground installation.
  • If underground service is requested for under 300 feet which is not an extension of an existing underground installation, the request may be granted if you pay $2850 for a minimum distance of 300 feet.
  • It is your responsibility to provide a meter loop with an appropriate disconnect
  • Services of 200 amps or more require a meter base equipped with built-in bypass capability.
  • According to the State Electrical Code, all wiring must be inspected by the state electrical inspector.
  • All commercial wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Residential wiring may be installed by either the homeowner or a licensed electrician. A list of electricians is included on our Contractor’s List (PDF).
  • For your convenience, the cooperative will coordinate the meter loop installation for you. If you choose this option; your installed cost is $1,100 for a 200-amp loop payable prior to installation.
  • The loop will include a meter base/disconnect combination unit with 8 additional breaker spaces, 1 20-amp circuit breaker, and a weatherproof GFI receptacle.
  • Meter loops are maintained and owned by the property owner as are any wires beyond the meter loop. The meter is maintained by and remains the property of the Cooperative.
  • An Administration Fee of $75 is applied to all new services.
  • Once service is active and energized a monthly Access Fee of $49.00 will be applied.

MLEC has the right to cancel your pending new service if it is not installed within a year of receiving your application.
